P.S. Take the ferry if you are coming from San Francisco- Marin traffic is expected to be a mess with the Bay Bridge closure

Marin County Traffic Jam Expected

Disruptions in organized traffic flow can crea...

Just a reminder that traffic is likely to be a bear this coming weekend in Marin County.  The Bay Bridge is scheduled to close from Thursday at 8pm to 5am Tuesday.  Friday is probably going to be the biggest traffic mess when San Francisco commuters head  over the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge.  Add in Labor Day weekend travelers departing the city or heading to it and it could be ugly.  Officials are advising holiday travelers to leave Thursday instead of Friday.  To top it off, the Sausalito Art Festival takes place this weekend.  If you are heading into Marin for that- take the Golden Gate Ferry!

More info here.

Patience may be the name of the game, but if you don’t have to commute, don’t!

Marin Farmer’s Markets

Farmer’s Markets are a great way to get fresh produce locally grown. Marin County is fortunate to have a number of great farmer’s markets on all different days. These are often great outings as many of them offer live music, games for kids, and a fun social atmosphere in additional to lots of fabulous locally grown produce! Each farmer’s market has its own special flare, so try out more than one. My personal favorite is the Thursday night event in downtown San Rafael.

California State Parks in Danger of Closing

One of the great things about living in California is the abundance of protected outdoor space and state parks.  Due to the California budget crisis, Govener Schwarzenegger has proposed to cut almost 80% of the California State Parks.  220 out of the states 279 parks are on the chopping block including Angel Island State Park!  View the full list of proposed California State Parks to be closed here.

Trader Joe’s to Open in August

I am so excited to see construction has finally started on the Larkspur Trader Joe’s grocery store. The Marin IJ reports that the store is set to open in August.

The store will be located in the Cost Plus Plaza in Larkspur just off the 101 freeway.  Yippee!

For Southern Marin Trader Joe’s fans, this will be a welcome change from fighting the traffic to San Rafael.

Can’t wait!

How To Prepare Your Household For An Earthquake

In 2003, the Department of Homeland Security launched Ready.gov, a government website aimed at family, business and community disaster readiness.

Now, when the Ready.gov website talks about disaster readiness, it’s referring to more than just physical attacks on the county — it’s talking about natural disasters, too.  This includes hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes and floods and these weather-related events impact the different parts of country each year.

The Ready.gov website is loaded with tips, notes and checklists, including the 3-minute “It Takes Just Three Steps To Get Ready For An Emergency” video featured above.

If you’ve never watched it, take the time to watch it today.  Then, test your home’s disaster readiness, take this 10-question quiz.  There’s no “passing grade”, per se, but with your own answers, you’ll see where there’s room for improvement.

Disasters can’t be predicted and most of us will face them at least once in our lives.  When disaster strikes, therefore, make sure you prepared for it in advance.  Protecting your household is a matter of just 3 simple steps.

Dawn Falls Live from Larkspur

Here is some video from one of my favorite hikes in Marin.  I took this yesterday at Dawn Falls in Larkspur.  It is short and very simple, but I was thrilled to capture the peaceful sounds of the waterfalls.  Enjoy!

I love Marin County

On Valentine’s Day, I thought I would share one of my true loves with you.  Every time I return home to the San Francisco Bay Area and Marin County, I am thankful for where I live.  It doesn’t matter where I have been, Marin County is my home and it has a beauty that is unparalleled- the San Francisco Bay, Mt. Tamalpais, the San Francisco skyline, the Pacific Ocean.

I love where I live!  Here is my postcard to you.  Enjoy the view!

Marin Emergency Contacts

We all know 9-1-1 is the number to call in an emergency from a land line, but did you know that 9-1-1- calls generated from a cell phone are answered outside Marin?  If you call 9-1-1- from the cell, it is likely to be answered by the CHP in Benicia.

While still useful, it may take longer to generate a response.  Program in the local emergency number for the Marin County Communications Center for the most direct response.  The local Marin County Emergency number is 415-472-0911.
